U-Factor vs. SHGC: What Homeowners Should Know

Window labels include several performance numbers, and two of the most common are U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC). Both describe energy behavior, but they answer different questions. For Wisconsin homeowners, understanding the distinction helps you specify glazing that supports winter comfort without ignoring summer overheating on sunny elevations.

What U-factor measures

U-factor describes how much heat transfers through the entire window assembly, including glass, frame, and spacer system. Lower numbers indicate less heat loss, which is especially important when heating dominates your utility costs.
